Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student has a preparation that allows him to formulate a public health project with particular attention to the promotion of oral health. In particular, the student is able to: - Know the evolution of the concept of health education. - Know the levels of a prevention intervention both in social and health. - Know the concept of empowerment and the guidelines in the practice of health education. - Know the concept of epidemiology and the main types of epidemiological studies. - To know the main dento-periodontal epidemiological indexes and the detection procedures. - Know the principles of fluoride prophylaxis. - Know the dental traumas with particular attention to the etiological aspects and risk factors. - Know the most common models of health services with particular attention to dental care models in the European Union. - Learn about oral health promotion experiences in community dentistry. - Know the problems of maintaining oral health in the elderly with particular attention to the non self-sufficient or residing in protected homes. - Know how to perform a proper assessment of the elderly patient and know how to formulate an appropriate oral hygiene treatment plan. - Know the problems of maintaining oral health in the disabled patient, knowing how to perform a correct disabled patient assessment and being able to formulate an adequate oral hygiene treatment plan.

Course contents

Pediatric tooth decay: classification, etiopathogenesis, prevention; prevention guidelines defined by the OMS.

Gingivitis in pediatric age: etiopathogenesis, prevention guidelines of prevention defined by the OMS.

Evaluation of the risk of oral diseases in children: diet, home oral hygiene, topical / systemic fluoroprophylaxis, periodic visits, sealing of the furrows.
The role of the dental hygienist in the promotion of oral health in pediatric age.
Prevention and promotion of oral health in pediatric age: nutrition education, home oral hygiene, topical fluoroprophylaxis.
Epidemiology and prevention of caries and periodontal disease in pediatric and adulthood.
Screening and epidemiological indices.
Levels of prevention: primary, secondary, tertiary.
Prevention and promotion of oral health in the geriatric patient.
Communication techniques: information aimed at different communities.
Organization of health education interventions with implementation of oral health projects addressed to different communities.
Cardiovascular diseases: etiology, risk factors and prevention.
Bacterial Endocarditis: definition, causes and risk factors.
