Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the role of nutrition in specific endocrine pathologies (hypothyroidism and hyerthyroidism, primary and secondary osteoporosis, hypercortisolism and metabolic effects of cortisol) and, vice versa, the effect of altered hormonal secretions on nutrition, knows the role of hormones on the control of caloric intake, with particular reference to S.Cushing hypercortisolism.


Course contents

Definition of Endocrinology and hormones-Rhythms of hormone secretion and main mechanisms of feedback in the control of hormone secretion-Thyroid anatomy and physiology of thyroid hormones-Pathologies from hypo- and hyperfunction of thyroid with discussion of clinical cases-Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis : overview of hypocortisolism and main clinical manifestations - Hypercortisolism: diagnosis, complications and therapy - Diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and various etiologies - Notes on the role of type 2 diabetes therapies and on incretins - Osteoporosis: definition and etiology, with particular regard to post-menopausal osteoporosis and secondary forms (hypercortisolism, hyperthyroidism, male hypogonadism) -Treatmentof osteoporosis. Impact of the aforementioned alterations of hormonal secretions on nutrition and the role of the nutritionist in each of these pathologies. Commentary on clinical cases with particular regard to the diagnostic criteria and the therapeutic role of food

The end-of-course exam aims to evaluate the achievement of the teaching objectives: - To know the diagnostic-clinical course of the main pathologies and the role of nutrition in each of them from the therapeutic point of view
