Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student is able to evaluate the historiographic orientations in relation to a topic studied, read and interpret edited and unpublished sources, and approach texts and data according to original perspectives as well as contextualize general problems in specific research cases. He is aware of the importance of historical-environmental heritage and the relevance of concepts, languages, complex categories placed in a diachronic perspective.
Course contents
The course will be divided into two modules during the second semester.
The module of lessons held by prof. Vincenzo Lagioia will be in the fist part of the second semester, while the module of lessons held by prof. Maria Teresa Guerrini will be in the second part of the second semester.
For prof. Lagioia module on family history, the theme of the course is "Norms, structures and rules in family relations from the sixteenth to the nineteenth century", and the lessons will focus on the transformation of family structures in Europe during the Ancien Régime by deepening in particular family and gender relations, lineages and kinships, major transformations of heritage propagation and reproduction strategies, regulated contexts, heterogeneity and marginality, transgression and adaptation with respect to the family-patriarchal, feminine, male, and identity patterns in early modern society.
The prof. Guerrini module will focus on the methodology and use of sources for social history. After this introductory phase it will be analyze in detail, with the methods and the language proper to social history, a couple of case studies.

Assessment methods
Students attending will have to choose a text from point A), the text of point B), a text chosen from those proposed in point C) and a text chosen from the ones proposed in point D) (4 texts total). Not attending students will add to this program a text to choose from point D) (5 texts total).
Verification is in oral form on the basis of the topics discussed during the lessons and works listed in the bibliography.
The exam will assess the student's command of the material studied in the course. The student will be judged on his ability to summarise and critically discuss topics raised in the course, making use of the exam bibliography and the course tools provided.
The assessment will thus consider the student's:
- knowledge and understanding of the topics covered;
- ability to summarise and analyse themes and concepts;
- familiarity with the terminology associated with the subject and his ability to use it effectively.
Top marks will be awarded to a student displaying an overall understanding of the topics discussed during the lectures, combined with a critical approach to the material and a confident and effective use of the appropriate terminology
Average marks will be awarded to a student who has memorized the main points of the material and is able to summarise them satisfactorily and provide an effective critical commentary, while failing to display a complete command of the appropriate terminology.
