Learning outcomes

The aim of the course is to enable students to function at a basic French grammar level (phonetics, morphology, syntax and basic vocabulary). At the end of the course, Students should be able to show a basic active and passive knowledge of the French language; they can read, take notes, follow a discussion in French, using vocabulary and syntax at a minimum level of A2 , and an ideal level of at least B1, according to the Council of Europe Framework.

Course contents

The course program will cover the following topics:

  1. Pronunciation
  2. Articles (Indefinite Articles; Definite Articles; Partitive Articles ; « articles contractés » ; Article Omission).
  3. Noun and Adjectives Gender and Number
  4. Pronouns (Subject ; Impersonal Subjects ; Object ; Object Pronoun Order; Relative Pronouns; C’est vs. Il est).
  5. Demonstrative (Pronoun and Adjective).
  6. Possessive (Pronoun and Adjective).
  7. Indefinite (Pronoun and Adjective).
  8. Interrogative (Pronoun and Adjective).
  9. Adverbs (“très, beaucoup et beaucoup de”)
  10. Comparisons
  11. Negation
  12. Questions
  13. “Gallicismes”
  14. Verbs: the passive voice; impersonal verbs; pronominal verbs.
  15. Verbs: Conjugations.

Frontal lectures, ppt presentations.

Assessment methods

ATTENDING STUDENTS (≥66%)

The final exam consists of a written test (closed-ended question) covering all the grammar topics of the program.

A MID-TERM written test is foreseen during the course.

 

NON ATTENDING STUDENTS (<33%)

For non attending students, the final exam consist of an oral test covering all the grammar topics of the program.
