Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student is able to understand the biochemical processes and functions of the following : liver, blood cells,vascular, adipose and bone tissues and  brain

Course contents

Liver : major metabolic pathways of the liver in relation to the control of blood glucose, amino acid catabolism and elimination ammonia , reactions of elimination of foreign and toxic metabolites and alcohol detoxification ; plasma protein synthesis;
Blood cells: metabolic pathways and functions of red cells, platelets and  polymorphonuclear cells
Vascular tissue cells: metabolic and functional aspects of endothelial cells and smooth muscle of the vessel.; major mediators of vascular tone control;

Adipose tissue : lipid metabolism in adipocytes and the role of adipocytes in obesity with increased cytokine release; role of adipocytes in the control of energy metabolism and caloric balance;
Brain: major metabolic pathways of nerve  and glial cells;metabolic control of the metabolism brain by SNC.
