Learning outcomes

The course provide a basic knowledge about the the major experimental techniques in the field of Applied Toxicology. Assays useful for hzards identification of xenobiotics as well as required for their registration will be discussed.

Course contents

Applied Toxicology - 1 (Prof Sabrina Angelini). The Good Laboratoriy Proctices (GLP). Animal testing. Alternative methods to animal testing. Cytotoxicity. Short-term toxicology. Long-term toxicology. Genetic toxicology. Cancerogenicity. Reproduction toxicity. Teratogenicity.

Laboratory training - Molecular biology techniques; Toxicological databases

Applied Toxicology - 2 (Dr Monia Lenzi). Laboratory training - The bio-toxicological laboratory: disposable equipment, safety devices and procedures. Cell culture: maintenance and use. Cell count and analysis of cell viability. Assessment of cell proliferation. Evaluation of the cytotoxicity of a xenobiotic. Lymphocytes isolation from whole blood. Mutagenicity tests: micronucleus and chromosomal aberrations. Preparation and staining of a glass slide. Microscopic analysis and interpretation of results.

The exam wil consist in an oral test aimed at assessing the student's understanding and knowledge of the topics set out during the course, and discussion on practical experiences carried out during the course.
