  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student should know: the general characteristics of chemical reactions (stoichiometry, kinetics and spontaneity); the structures and properties of the chemical constituents of living matter,  simple molecules and macromolecular of carbohydrate, lipid and protein; the description of the main protein (myoglobin, hemoglobin, collagen protein antibodies); the structural and functional characteristics of the enzymes, their mechanism of action, the enzyme kinetics and the mechanisms of regulation of the activity of the enzymes at the gene level and post-translational; the structure of nucleic acids and the description of the processes involved in DNA replication, in the synthesis of the acids in the synthesis of RNA and proteins; thermodynamic aspects of biochemical processes and the fundamentals of cellular bioenergetics.

Course contents

Structure - function relations of proteins; Myoglobin, hemoglobin, collagen; immunoglobulins; Enzymes as catalysts; Enzyme kinetics; Regulation of the activity of the enzymes; Structure of nucleic acids; Structure of chromosomes, DNA synthesis; Transcription, synthesis and maturation of the various types of RNA, translation, synthesis and maturation of proteins; Human Genome; Regulation of gene expression; Principles of thermodynamics applied to cellular reactions; Characteristics and properties of  ATP and other molecules highly energetic
