Information and documents required to apply

Is it mandatory to attach supporting documentation when applying?

The application procedure allows to attach documents. However, to submit your application correctly, it is not mandatory to provide any documentation other than the completed online form. 

If I have carried out various work activities (e.g. multiple employee contracts and/or business activities, self-employment, etc.) during the reference period, do I have to include them all? 

It is sufficient to include the work activities that, even when added together, ensure that at least one of the requirements set out in the Notice is met. The maximum number of sections that can be completed is three. 

If I am an employee and am also registered in a professional register or list, which field should I fill in?

It is possible to fill in both fields. 

Is it necessary to specify that the work activity is still ongoing? 

You must have met the admission requirements for the type of work activity carried out by the deadline of the notice. For the purposes of recognition of status, it is not relevant whether the work activity is ongoing or not.

Is it possible to apply for even if the matriculation or enrolment procedure for subsequent years has not yet been completed?

The application can be submitted even if the matriculation or enrolment procedure for subsequent years has not yet been completed. The relevant offices will verify the enrolment details. 

If I change degree programme after submitting my application for recognition of status, do I need to follow a specific procedure or reapply? 

In the event of a change of degree programme, it is not necessary to re-submit the application, but it is strongly recommended that you inform the relevant Office by sending an email to: conciliazione.studiolavoro@unibo.it.

Recognised work activities

Can those who have carried out or are carrying out Universal Civil Service activities apply for recognition of working student status?

Yes.

Can those who have an intermittent employment contract, known as an 'on-call' contract, apply for recognition of their status as a working student?

Yes.

Can those who have a coordinated and continuous collaboration contract apply for recognition of working student status?

Yes.

Can those with a fixed-term contract apply for recognition of working student status?

Yes.

For the purposes of recognition of working student status, is a curricular internship considered a work activity?

No.

Can those with an extracurricular internship contract apply for recognition of working student status?

Yes.

Working abroad

Can working student status also be recognised for those who live or work abroad?

Yes, working student status can be recognised regardless of residence and place of work.  

In the case of work carried out abroad, what information can be used in place of the employer's VAT number or tax code?

The data to be entered in place of the VAT number is the identification code (e.g. FEIN - Federal Employer Identification Number, etc.).

Undergraduate and postgraduate students

Can undergraduates and graduate students apply for working student status?

Yes, if they are regularly enrolled in the 2025/26 academic year. 

Can students who are enrolled beyond the standard duration of their degree programme also apply for working student status?

Yes, for the purposes of applying for recognition as a working student, it does not matter whether your enrolment for the 2025–26 academic year is 'regular' or 'late completion'.

Does working student status have any impact on university fees?

No.

Study programme

Does working student status affect class attendance?

No, it does not affect class attendance and does not provide for exemptions or reductions in any attendance requirements. For information on the attendance requirements for individual degree programmes, please refer to the 'Studying' section, under 'Lecture attendance' on the programme webpage.

Are students with the working student status eligible for distance learning and lecture recordings?

Among the measures common to all degree programmes, distance learning and lecture recordings are not included in the working student status.
However, the University of Bologna allows lecture recordings at the discretion of individual lecturers and considering the characteristics of the course. It is recommended that you contact the lectuter responsible for the course to check whether you can access the lecture recordings.

Does working student status affect the study plan and the completion of curricular or postgraduate internships?

No.

Is there a limit to the number of credits that can be earned annually due to working student status?

No.

Is the working student status linked to the procedure for recognition of credits for extra-curricular activities?

No, it is not linked to the procedure for recognising credits for extra-curricular activities. Information on the recognition of credits for extra-curricular activities is available on the Recognition of credits page. 

Does working student status affect the minimum time required to obtain a degree?

No.

Part-time programme

Are working student status and part-time study the same thing?

No. The part-time programme is a separate procedure from working student status. Therefore, both can be requested independently, according to their respective procedures.

Which University service can I contact for help in choosing a degree programme?

The University of Bologna provides support in choosing a degree programme through its guidance service, which organises dedicated initiatives and events
