FAQs - frequently asked questions: tuition fees

Amounts

Why do I have to pay €157.04 even though I have full exemption?

This figure corresponds to:

  • the €140 regional tax for the right to education
  • stamp duty of €16
  • insurance premium of €1.04

The amount is not a university fee, so you have to pay it regardless of your economic situation, even if you are fully exempt.

I am transferring from another university, changing programme or am having credits recognised. What year am I enrolling in?

Fees are calculated differently depending on the year of enrolment. To check the reference year, you have to start from the academic year in which you first enrolled at the university.

I am transferring from another university

If you transfer from another university, you must count all the years of enrolment at the other university, regardless of the year you are admitted to the University of Bologna.

I am changing programme at the University of Bologna

If you change course within the University of Bologna, you must count all the years of enrolment at our university, regardless of the year you are admitted to the new programme.

I am having credits recognised from previous careers

If you apply for recognition of credits acquired in a previous university career and are admitted to a year following the first, this is the year that counts for fee calculation purposes. You must therefore have acquired the merit requirements from 11 August 2023 to 10 August 2024:

  • 10 credits if you wish to enrol in the second year
  • 25 credits if you wish to enrol in years subsequent to the second year

How can I certify that I have paid my fees?

You can print out the 'Declaration for tax purposes' from the 'Certificates and Self-certifications' section in Students Online. For the purposes of tax deductions, payments must be made in a traceable form (bank transfer, credit card etc.).

Refund

I have paid more than I should have. How can I get a refund?

You can obtain a refund for any overpayment by contacting the student Administration office of your degree programme. The refund will be credited to your current account or joint account, the IBAN of which must be entered in the Studenti Online register.

I paid the fees, but I graduated within the last session of the academic year. Can I get a refund?

  • If you pay the fees but graduate within the last session of the a.y. 2023/24, the enrolment for the new academic year will be cancelled.
  • If you have only paid the first instalment of 157.04€, you will need to contact the Regional Authority for the Right to Higher Education (ER.GO) directly to request a refund of the regional fee (140.00€). Neither the tax stamp (16.00€) nor the insurance premium (1.04€) can be refunded.

  • If you have paid the single instalment or the subsequent instalments, you will need to contact the Regional Authority for the Right to Higher Education (ER.GO) directly to request a refund of the regional fee (140.00€) and you will need to submit a specific application to the student office for the refund of the instalments or the single instalment, after entering the IBAN code on which to make the refund in the profile of Studenti Online. Neither the tax stamp (16.00€) nor the insurance premium (1.04€) can be refunded.

Payment timing

I have paid the fee, why do I still not see the payment made on Student Online?

It may take up to two days from when you paid to when the system receives the payment.

What happens if I pay late?

If you do not pay your fees on time and up to 30 days late, you will have to pay a late fee of €30. For delays of more than 30 days, the penalty will increase to €150.

The late payment fee will appear in Online Students, in the 'Your payments' section, and you will be charged automatically.

What happens if I don't pay?

If you do not pay the first instalment, you will not be enrolled for the academic year and will therefore not be able to start or continue your student career.

If you do not pay the second or third instalment, you will be enrolled for the academic year but your career will still be blocked and you will therefore not be able to start any procedures (e.g. taking exams, compiling your study plan).

Economic documentation

I also declared income and/or assets abroad in my ISEE. How do I document them?

If you included foreign income and/or assets for a member of your family in your ISEE, remember to document them by sending the documentation of foreign income and/or assets.

I am stateless or have applied for political asylum. How can I document my financial situation?

Pay only on the basis of any income and/or assets held in Italy, without submitting declarations from Embassies or Consulates.

If you have income and/or assets held in Italy, you must certify them via ISEE (Equivalent Economic Situation Indicator).

You must prove that you are a stateless person or a political refugee by sending the official documentation to Er.Go that was issued by the Civil Court, if you are stateless, or by the specific Commission set up by the Ministry of the Interior if you have applied for political asylum.
