FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions: extending the duration of your studies (part-time student status)

If I enrol as a part-time student, do I have to pay tuition fees every year or every two years?

Every year. For example: if you enrol in the first year of a degree programme as a part-time student in the 2024/25 academic year (= year 1A), you must pay the tuition fees for year 1A. The following year, when you enrol in the 2025/26 academic year (= year 1B), you will have to pay the tuition fees for year 1B.

If I enrol as a part-time student, are the applicable tuition fees 50% of the maximum amount listed for the degree programme?

Yes, but only if you did not submit the ISEE. If you submit the ISEE, fees are calculated based on the progressive fee scale used by the University of Bologna. Nonetheless, this amount will never be over 50% of the maximum amount listed for the degree programme.

I submitted the ISEE. If I enrol as a part-time student, do I have to pay 50% of the payable amount based on my ISEE?

No. Every year you will have to pay the entire payable amount based on your ISEE. For example: if the payable amount based on your ISEE is €1000, this is the amount that you must pay for year 1A. When you enrol in year 1B, you will have to pay the full payable amount based on the ISEE you submit.

Is there financial support for part-time students?

Yes, because part-time student status increases the number of academic years in which you can benefit from the right to higher education, including the calculation of tuition fees based on your ISEE.

How many credits must I take to receive a tuition fee adjustment based on my ISEE if I enrol as a part-time student for the first time this year?

If you enrol as a part-time student for the first time, and you were a full-time student in the previous year, the study requirements are the the same for full-time students, which are as follows:

  • if you are enrolling in the second year, you must have taken at least 10 credits in the twelve months leading up to 10 August before your enrolment in the coming year;
  • if you are enrolling in any other year, you must have taken at least 25 credits in the twelve months leading up to 10 August before your enrolment in the coming year.

This does not apply if you enrol as a part-time student during the first year of studies: there are no study requirements for students enrolling in the first year.

How many credits must I have taken to be able to receive a tuition fee adjustment based on my ISEE if I was enrolled as a part-time student in the previous year?

If last year you were enrolled as a part-time student, the study requirements to receive a tuition fee adjustment are:

  • 5 credits taken in the twelve months up to 10 August before your enrolment in the coming year if you were enrolled in the first year of your degree programme (1A);
  • 12 credits taken in the twelve months leading up to 10 August before your enrolment in the coming year in all other cases.

During what year can I apply to receive part-time student status?

You can apply during any year of your degree programme by submitting the application by the published deadlines.

If I have 60 credits to take over the two-year period, do I have to choose which exams to take in the first year and which to take in the second year?

No, you do not have to make any choices in advance; you can take the exams for the 60 credits in any moment of the two-year period, as long as the lessons of your degree programme have finished.

When can I access internships?

You can access internships during any moment of the two-year period for the academic year during which the internship is scheduled.

If I’ve gone beyond the established graduation schedule, can I receive part-time student status?

No, you can receive part-time student status only if you are enrolled in a degree programme and within the established graduation schedule.

My study programme includes teaching activities with attendance requirements. How can I deal with these requirements as a part-time student?

You can decide which teaching activities to fully attend in the first year and which to attend in the second year of the two-year part-time student period. Attention: lesson hours cannot be distributed across the two year period, but must be completed continuously.
