14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course (A1)

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Ravenna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 6731)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge obtained in the teaching of Biochemistry.

Course contents

The course will be divided into a frontal teaching part in which the following topics will be addressed:

Techniques for studying the structure of proteins

XRD, NMR, cryo-EM

Main analytical techniques used in biochemistry

Spectrophotometry

Fluorescence

Purification and separation techniques

Ultracentrifugation

Electrophoresis

Western Blotting

Processing laboratory data using spreadsheets

Two laboratory experiments will be carried out:

- biochemical laboratory on enzyme kinetics
- biochemical laboratory on protein quantification.

Readings/Bibliography

PowerPoint presentations supplemented by personal notes can provide useful support for studying the subject.

Teaching methods

Traditional and online lessons based on Power-Point presentations.

Laboratory exercises and subsequent data processing.
In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, attendance of this training activity requires all students of Modules 1 and 2 to complete it in e-learning mode [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio ] and participation in Module 3 of specific training on safety and health in places of study. Information on the dates and methods of attendance of Module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the study course website.

Assessment methods

The laboratory course program is not included in the final exam of Biochemistry. Students are required to produce a short report with the analytical data obtained from the enzyme kinetics and protein quantification experiments, which is mandatory to submit before taking the Biochemistry exam.

Teaching tools

All lessons will be supported by Power-Point presentations, made available before the lessons.
