Description
The ATIAH project aims to improve the relevance and quality of European higher education (HE) by developing tools for HE institutions wishing to review and improve their practices of internationalisation at home (IaH).
Most often HE internationalisation has focused on transnational mobility. The rationale behind ATIAH is that the benefits of an internationalised university experience should not be limited to the internationally-mobile minority. If we are to achieve smart, sustainable and inclusive European HE, as set out in the Europe 2020 Growth Strategy and its Flagship Initiatives, internationalising the experiences and mind-sets of the non-mobile majority should be an equally important priority. For universities seeking to graduate interculturally competent global citizens, IaH can purposefully integrate international and intercultural dimensions into the formal and informal curriculum for all students. Students can learn foreign languages, have access to staff with international experience, benefit from learning with peers from other countries and cultures, and engage in ‘virtual mobility’ via online learning.
The ATIAH project aims:
- To explore and develop ways of integrating a global dimension into curriculum design and content;
- To suggest ways of evidencing innovative practices of internationalisation at home.
ATIAH will result in a set of materials which can be disseminated across the European HE sector:
- An audit tool for HE institutions seeking to review and develop their policies and practices for IaH;
- A multilingual web-available curriculum framework for an ‘internationalising your university experience’ module;
- A multilingual web-available framework for evidencing ‘best practice’ in IaH.
The primary target groups for these materials are staff development units at HE institutions and/or academic service units responsible for professional development, HE staff at all levels (i.e. academic, research, administrative), HE students (both internationally-mobile and non-mobile learners), and those holding a leadership position in HE institutions (e.g. department heads, programme directors, heads of school, etc.).
