Learning outcomes

The goal of the course is to provide knowledge of numerical methods including: root-finding, elementary numerical linear algebra, solving systems of linear equations, curve fitting, and numerical solution to ordinary and partial differential equations. Topics include the application of finite elements to parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations.

Course contents

Finite numbers and errors.

Direct methods for the solution of linear systems.

Least squares data approximation.

Polinomial interpolation  with Lagrange basis.

Numerical integration with Newton-Cotes method.

Finding roots of ninlinear equation in one dimension: bisection method, fixed point method, Newton method. Hints on the solution of nonlinear systems.

Exercises with Matlab on the previous topics.
