Learning outcomes

Aim of the course is to:

  • Get familiar with occupational risk factors with special emphasis to those settings where these professionals are involved
  • Recognize the epidemiology of the most common occupational diseases along with health promotion strategies
  • Have a good knowledge of the normative and basic principles of work safety and health
  • Apply these principles to promote good practices

Course contents

Part A: General concepts related to Occupational Medicine

  • Introduction to Occupational Medicine (history, statistics, aims)
  • Reference legislative frame. The role of the occupational physician
  • Classification of occupational risk factors (physical, chemical, biological agents, biomechanical and relational factors)
  • Introduction to occupational toxicology and hygiene

Part B: Occupational diseases

  • Work-related muscoloskeletal disorders
  • Occupational cancers
  • Stress-related diseases (bullying, mobbing, and burnout)
  • Work, fertility and pregnancy

Part C: Occupational risk factors in the healthcare setting

  • Biomechanical overload
  • Chemical risk
  • Biological risk
  • Skin diseases and asthma

Assessment methods

Multiple choice test

The exam will consist of multiple choice test with only one correct option (16 questions). The scores will be the following: +2 for correct answers, -0.5 for incorrect answers, 0 for unanswered questions.

The exam will take place in the computer room “Carlo Francioni” (Polo Murri). Duration: 30 minutes.

The evaluation of the exam is expressed as a mark out of 30. The minimum passing grade is 18/30, the maximum 30/30 cum laude.

Students must sign up using AlmaEsami. Late registrations are not admitted.

Health Management Sciences and Forensic Medicine

The final score will be calculated as weighted average of the individual marks of the following exams:

-Employment Law (2 CFU)

-Economy and Development of the Agrofood Sector (2 CFU)

-Occupational Medicine (1 CFU)

-Legal Medicine and Professional Ethics (1 CFU)

To be noted that Prof. Mainardi (lecturer in Employment Law) will be in charge of the recording of the final score.
