Course contents

The course involves the translation of texts of a different nature, of varying difficulty and length, in which the different expressive characteristics of both languages will be compared and some basic techniques for translating from Chinese into Italian will be learned, focusing on the more articulated syntactic structures of the written language and specialized terminology.

It is a six-month course and it has a total duration of 40 hours.

Please note that minumum compulsory attendance is 70% of class hours.

Readings/Bibliography

It is not necessary to purchase specific texts. Updated teaching material is provided for lessons and can also be found by means of a username and password in the "teaching materials" section of the teaching page.

Teaching methods

The translation of a text will begin with the identification of the register and genre of the source text; the identification of the dominant function of the text; the translation of the text will be carried out individually or in small groups with the help of the teacher; finally the whole class will carry on the analysis and commentary on the translation.

Through the analysis of translations and translation nodes, a reflection on the main translation strategies in Chinese-Italian translation will be elaborate by the group.

Assessment methods

At the end of the course there will be a written 3-hour examination for a Chinese-Italian translation with a printed dictionary (2 hours) and a translation of short texts and sentences without a dictionary (1 hour).

The final grade of the integrated course of Translation from Italian into Chinese I will be defined on the average of the marks given in the two tests making up the exam itself (one written test for Translation from Chinese into Italian I and one written test for Translation from Italian into Chinese I).
