Laurea Magistrale (Second cycle degree/Two year Master - 120 ECTS) in Aerospace Engineering

Second Cycle Degree/two-year Master graduates must acquire a level of preparation and specialisation that enables them to assume technical and organisational roles in professional contexts that require knowledge of the fundamental methodological and operational aspects of engineering, prioritising the aspects specific to the field of aerospace engineering but without neglecting the general aspects of industrial engineering. Graduates must be able to apply analytical, and numerical simulation tools and experimental laboratory methods. Aerospace and astronautical engineers must be able to produce physical/mathematical models to analyse the performance characteristics of aircraft and satellites as well as the structure of their physical environment. They may also be involved in the study of advanced methods to manage aircraft mission scenarios and to plan satellite missions using information and processing systems in aerospace environments. These objectives are achieved through study plan that offers a sound foundation in physics and mathematics, gained through specific modules of the master's degree programme, followed by the acquisition of professional and operational skills in the aerospace disciplines, focusing in particular on aerodynamics, flight mechanics and dynamics and aerospace structures. Moreover, thanks to the two tracks offered by the programme, students will acquire specific skills in the fields of atmospheric and space flight technologies through the study of disciplines related to the design of aircraft, helicopters and remotely piloted aircraft and those related to the design of satellite platforms and space missions. The study plan concludes with an internship and a substantial dissertation project, with ample opportunity given to students to carry out autonomous activities. Indeed, by carrying out laboratory work, students will develop the skills necessary to plan, implement and analyse project results, including those with a high level of complexity.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDINGGraduates in Aerospace Engineering have acquired knowledge and understand:- theoretical and scientific aspects of mathematics, physics and other sciences, so as general and specific aeronautics and aerospace engineering aspects;- basic principles and techniques of numerical modeling and applied mathematics to engineering and aerospace disciplines in particular;- advanced elements of constructive configurations, plant engineering, aerospace systems and subsystems, unmanned systems;-advanced elements of aerodynamics, flight dynamics, propulsion, aeronautical and astronautical technology and controls;- design elements for satellite and space mission systems and subsystems;- aspects related to business organization (corporate culture) and management of a complex project.Such skills will be acquired through frontal lectures, also carried out by foreign professors, exercises in labs, seminars and individual study. Assessment will be carried out through oral or written exams, reports and /or individual or group presentations.APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDINGGraduates are capable of:- identifying, formulating and solving complex problems or those requiring an interdisciplinary approach, also using innovative solutions; - applying the analytical tools and knowledge related to typical advanced technologies of the sector also to other important engineering sectors; - using and developing technical and scientific software of general and sectoral field;- managing the experimentation, the motion of spacecraft in orbit and on land, their dynamics and the laws of functional control to the control of trajectories and major orbital perturbations, guidance, navigation and system control;- producing physical / mathematical models to analyze the characteristics and performance of aircraft and spacecraft, and the physical structure of the environment in which they move and apply them also with simulation techniques.Such skills will be acquired through specific tasks aimed at verifying the students' understanding of analytical tools and methodology. Individual critical analysis and communication skills will be assessed through individual and group projects. The same skills will also be assessed during the preparation and presentation of the final thesis.MAKING JUDGMENTSGraduates:- have synthesis skills;- can carry out a research autonomously or guided by the professor;- can keep updated about methods, techniques and tools in the numerous aerospace engineering areas;- can retrieve, consult and interpret the main national, European and international technical and legislative magazines in the aerospace field;- is capable of incisively presenting and discussing a personal project;The graduates' autonomy of judgment is particularly developed through exercises and seminars, especially in the context of the courses included in the study plans in which relevance is given to the alternatives required by the project choices.The acquisition assessment takes also place through the evaluation autonomy and ability level to work in a group during the activities assigned in the various projects, laboratories and in preparation for the internship and the final thesis.COMMUNICATION SKILLSGraduates:- can speak English and Italia fluently, both in written and oral forms, also when it comes to specific field terms;- can autonomously draw project technical reports and understand reports written by other experts;- can positively join a workgroup, also when appointed in charge;- is capable of retrieving, filtering and understanding data, so as to express an autonomous evaluation of their technical relevance;- can communicate data, information, ideas, problems and solutions to external communicators, being either field experts or non-experts;Oral and written communication skills are particularly developed during teaching activities where reports, written documents and their explanation are required. Communication skills are also acquired through the final thesis draw-up and presentation and through the internship final report.LEARNING SKILLSGraduates:-can keep updated about methods, techniques and tools in the numerous aerospace engineering areas, in particular in aerodynamics, flight mechanics, aerospace structures, propulsion and systems;- possess the necessary skills to carry out a PhD or other programmes, either in Italy or abroad, with a high degree of autonomy. Such learning skills are gained throughout the entire master's degree, through the teaching activities of all disciplinary sector and are evaluated through the project and the final thesis.
