Learning outcomes

The Seminars of Philosophy have the specific goals of seminar-oriented teaching: (1) train the students to philosophical argumentations, encouraging discussion specific texts and general themes, in original language as well, in the course of lectures and workshop featuring Italian and international scholars: (2) enlarge and deepen philosophical knowledge thanks to the participation in lectures held by specialists of different fields; (3) compare the different methodological approaches, as a way to integrate the curricular teaching. 

Course contents

The Inspector of the Market and His Cases

This seminar will offer a varied range of readings, along with their discussion in class, meant to explore the technical knowledge of the officers in charge to control the markets in Medieval Islamic urban centers. It will also give an overview of how their empirical knowledge and common sense were applied to the unveiling of adulterations and ffrauds. 

The seminar will have a special focus on the material history that can be reconstructed from such textual sources. 

The seminar will as well include simple replication experiences.

Teaching methods

The course provides the students with the theoretical tools to engage in the reading and comment of textual sources in an interdisciplinary perspective. Students will be encouraged to follow their specific interests developed during the course, and to present the results of their individual or group research in class. In general, they will be invited to take active part to the discussion in class.

Assessment methods

Oral examination in which the student will be asked to display his or her knowledge of the contents dealt with during the seminar, as well as the ability to commento on the primary sources and link the different topics dealt with in class.
