39800 - Angiographic Imaging Techniques (RN)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 9079)

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the technical-practical and methodological knowledge necessary to carry out angiographic investigations with appropriate protocols based on the patient's clinical question, the pathology and the type of equipment available. Recognizes artefacts and image quality criteria, the multidisciplinary team, radiation protection and hygiene standards.

Course contents

The course offers the student elements for the acquisition of knowledge and skills in the field of angiographic imaging in the vascular room, in the hemodynamics room, in the hybrid operating room and in the CT room.

The program includes the following didactic contents:

  • The role of the radiology technician in angiographic imaging in: Vascular room, Hemodynamics room, Hybrid operating room and CT room
  • Differences between the different rooms where angiographic imaging can be performed (how the environment is organized, equipment used, materials and working methods)
  • What the technician must know and what the technician must be able to do in these environments (which tests are carried out, comparison of angiographic imaging)
  • How to deal with sterility and radiation protection in different work environments.
  • Comparison of various angiographic techniques (advantages and disadvantages)

ANGIOGRAPHIC IMAGING IN THE VASCULAR ROOM:

  • Digital subtraction angiography (DSA)
  • Instruments of a vascular room: angiograph, needle, guide, catheter, injector
  • Vascular interventional procedures (embolization, fibrinolysis, placement of vascular filters, stents and drainages, etc.)
  • The role of the technician in conducting the examination, use of protective devices and attention to the sterility of the environments

ANGIOGRAPHIC IMAGING IN THE HEMODYNAMICS ROOM:

  • Instruments of a hemodynamics room: equipment and materials used
  • Main procedures in hemodynamics (study of coronary arteries, study of heart cavities and valves, coronary angioplasty, etc.)
  • The role of the technician in the hemodynamics room (conducting the examination, radiation protection, images and sterility of the environments)

ANGIOGRAPHIC IMAGING IN THE HYBRID VASCULAR OPERATING ROOM:

  • Hybrid vascular operating room instruments: angiograph, injector and materials used in the hybrid room
  • Main procedures in the hybrid vascular room (traumatic angiography, carotid stenosis, placement of vascular endoprostheses, etc.)
  • The role of the technician in the hybrid vascular room (examination, radiation protection, image storage, sterility of the environments)

VASCULAR ANGIOGRAPHIC IMAGING IN CT:

  • CT room instruments: equipment and injector
  • Main vascular examinations performed in CT (intra cranial angio, extra cranial angio (TSA), pulmonary embolism, thoracic-abdominal aortic angio, TAVI, lower limb angio (Run Off), coronary CT.
  • The role of the technician in vascular CT exams (examination conduction, radiation protection, image post processing)

Teaching methods

Lectures with ppt slides and presentation of videos and images and angiography of the different work environments

Assessment methods

The exam will be oral with a couple of questions on the general topics covered in class, and may be deepened with a couple of more specific questions if deemed appropriate on the discussion of angiographic images.

The test will be evaluated on the basis of the following parameters:

- knowledge, mastery and deepening of the contents
- critical and expository skills
- technical-scientific terminological correctness.
