90969 - Technical Sciences of Radiological Imaging of the Osteoarticular system (BO)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 9079)

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the study techniques and the methods for the osteoarticular apparatus in conventional radiology, is able to recognize the appropriate study protocol.

Course contents

The program includes the diagnostic approach to the conventional study of the musculoskeletal system with focus on the anatomy of the districts of interest, radiographic projections and commonly used equipment.

  • Geometric parameters: orthogonal planes and landmarks;
  • Physical parameters (kV, mA, time) and their use;
  • Radiographic study of the skull: an outline of anatomy, study projections and criteria of correctness;
  • Radiographic study of the spine: an outline of anatomy of the cervical, dorsal and lumbar tract, study projections and criteria of correctness;
  • Radiographic study of the shoulder girdle: notes on anatomy, study projections and correctness criteria;
  • Radiographic study of the upper limbs: an outline of anatomy, study projections and criteria of correctness;
  • Radiographic study of the lower limbs: outline of anatomy, study projections and correctness criteria;
  • Radiographic study of the pelvis: outline of anatomy, study projections and correctness criteria.

Readings/Bibliography

The bibliography will be updated and communicated at the beginning of the lessons; the slides shared during the lectures will be delivered.

The fundamental bases of the most recent radiographic technique are represented by the following sources:

1. MERRILL'S ATLAS OF RADIOGRAPHIC POSITIONING AND PROCEDURES, E. FRANK, B. LONG, B. SMITH (12th edition)

2.RADIOLOGICAL ANATOMY - F. MAZZUCATO (ed. 2009)

3. ATLAS OF GENERAL RADIOLOGICAL AND SKELETAL TECHNIQUE, TRENTA - A. CORINALDESI, A. SAS (ed. Universo)

4. MANUALE DI DIAGNOSTICA PER IMMAGINI PER TSRM - P. TORRICELLI, (ed. Esculapio 2023)

Teaching methods

Interactive frontal lessons through the viewing of Case Reports in osteo-articular imaging diagnostics and related discussion with an approach to the Clinical Reasoning Cycle.

Assessment methods

PART 1: Written assignment with open questions preparatory to the oral exam. During the written exam, the candidate will be shown an x-ray of a body area for which the following must be identified:

the anatomical parts present;
clinical indications;
the study technique.
PART 2: Oral interview during which the topics covered during the lectures will be considered also through the viewing/discussion of radiographic images. They will be evaluated:

knowledge of contents;
the argument;
clarity and mastery of presentation;
interaction and critical ability.

Teaching tools

All the educational contents covered during the lessons will be shared through the UniBO VIRTUAL platform.

For the first time in an institutional context, teaching will also be supported through Meducoach, an educational platform intended for students and healthcare professionals of Medical Radiology (TSRM).

The web tool, intuitive and easy to understand, will make the contents related to radiological imaging of the osteo-articular system accessible, through 3D images, contributing to the improvement of learning outcomes in diagnostic imaging techniques..
