Learning outcomes
The course aims to analyze the political-institutional evolution of the main countries bordering the two shores of the Mediterranean during the so-called long nineteenth century from a comparative perspective. At the end of the course the student can outline an institutional evolution of the main riparian countries and the interactions and contaminations between them. The historical-political perspective is juxtaposed with that of a constitutional nature with the aim of highlighting a patterning and series of contaminations peculiar to the geographical-political area in question.
Course contents
The first introductory week will be devoted to the political and institutional history of the main countries in the Mediterranean area and the lines of continuity and discontinuity between the 19th and 20th centuries. The crises of southern Europe in the 1970s and their international dimension will then be explored. In addition to the Italian case because of its centrality in the Euro-Mediterranean space, the course will focus on Spain, Greece and Portugal, countries that experienced processes of democratic transition in the 1970s. A specific focus will be reserved for Portugal, a particularly relevant case study for the intertwining of the transition from an authoritarian regime to a democratic system, European integration, Atlanticism and the process of decolonization.

Teaching methods
Frontal lectures and seminar activities.
Frontal lectures will be complemented by student participation in classroom discussions based on readings indicated during the course. Attending students will also be expected to prepare an individual presentation on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer, which will contribute to the final assessment.
Assessment methods
Attending students:
a written test on the lecture content and the compulsory text; an oral test on the monograph of your choice, as well as a classroom presentation of a topic agreed upon with the lecturer.
Non-attending students:
one written test on the two compulsory texts and one oral test on the two monographs of their choice.
