Learning outcomes

The aim of this course is to illustrate the molecular e cellular basis, as well as the main homeostatic control and integration mechanisms, of selected functions of humans and animals.

Course contents

Principles of physiological regulation. Fundamental concepts of cellular physiology; diffusion through membranes, ion channels, facilitated and active transport mechanisms, osmosis. Chemical messengers. The endocrine system: endocrine glands and hormonal actions. Electrochemical potentials and membrane potential. The properties of excitable cells: genesis and conduction of the action potential. Nerve cell physiology and general organization of the nervous system. Synaptic transmission. Neurotransmitters and receptors. Sensory input: characteristics of sensory receptors and transduction mechanisms related to the main sensory modalities. The neuromuscular junction: The skeletal muscle, molecular basis of contraction and coupling excitation contraction. The heart muscle and the functions of the heart. The respiratory system: gas exchange and breathing regulation. The water-saline balance and the regulation of the internal medium. Functions of the kidney.

Teaching methods

The course includes frontal lessons and laboratory sessions during which discussion on the topics presented will be encouraged.

Assessment methods

The final exam aims at evaluating the achievement of the teaching objectives by verifying the knowledge aquired through the frontal lessons and the laboratory excercises. The exam is written, with multiple-choice and also open questions to which the student will be asked to provide concise but pertinent answers.
