  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Mathematics (cod. 5827)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students know foundamental numerical algorithms and can use software for education and numerical applications.

Course contents

The course aims to present numerical methods for the solution of mathematical problems faced in secondary schools. Laboratory activities consist in the solution of mathematical problems by widely used Math Education Software.

The following topics will be covered during the course.

  • Numerical integration
  • Numerical methods for non linear equations and for roots of polynomials
  • Numerical methods for one dimensional and bidimensional optimization
  • Elements of linear programming: the graphical method for an LP problem with two variables
  • Numerical methods for ordinary differential equations
Matlab programming language. Geogebra, software for mathematics education.

    Assessment methods

Realization of a project and a oral exam.

The oral exam is structured to verify the knowledge and the degree of understanding of the theory developed in the course. Both the ability to communicate the subject in a critical way and the use of an appropriate mathematical language are evaluated with particular attention.

The project consists in the preparation of a laboratory exercise using the didactic software presented in the course. The topic is assigned by the teacher. The project aims to evaluate the ability to use educational software for the numerical solution of a mathematical problem.

The project, which must be individual, can be presented in an session prior to the one in which the oral exam is taken.

To be able to take the oral exam it is necessary to have obtained a grade higher than 18/30 in the assigned project.

The final grade takes into account the results achieved in both tests.
