Learning outcomes

Students acquire the basic skills of cultural mediation and dialogue interpreting and they can apply them to real-world situations, as well as basic interpretation techniques and he/she is able to use them.
This course is aimed at forming of a professional interpreter widely requested in different working  contests. The formed interpreter will be ready to face up to negotiations, different events, fairs etc.

Course contents

The aim of the course is to provide students with necessary practical skills for managing intercultural communicative situations in two languages, Italian and Russian. Sight translations from and into Russian, reformulation and memorization exercises will be carried out, as well as role-play activities in which students will face different communicative situations in several fields.
The course also aims to improve students' public speaking and Russian language skills.
The topics of the texts will be:
commercial (simulation of negotiations, speeches at conferences and during fairs); medical-health; legal; social; technical-scientific etc.
During the laboratory exercises, the control phase dedicated to critical reflection on the translation made and the analysis of the most common errors and inaccuracies will be performed.

Teaching methods

Preparatory exercises: memorisation, synthesis, speech reformulation, role-playing. Students will have the opportunity to act as interpreters in situations close to the reality, as real speeches are used. When dealing with a specific subject matter, its terminological aspects will be analyzed by preparing specific glossaries.
Exercises as sight translation, memorization activities, preparation of glossaries and simulations of real work situations in different fields.

Assessment methods

The exam consists of a dialogue interpretation of tests IT-RU and RU-IT on some topics covered during the year.

Valutation: 30% continuous valutation, 70% final exam consisting of a dialogic interpretation test during which the general qualities of the interpretation (general understanding, fluency, logic), accuracy of the content, register and presence will be assessed of stylistic and lexical details and nuances. During the exam, texts on topics similar to those taught in class will be proposed.

The topics of the texts to be sight-translated into Italian and Russian will relate to the themes developed during Prof. Ksenia Balakina's lectureship course.
