Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will acquire the competences relative to infant nutrition. This includes understanding how to promote and practice a proper breastfeeding.
Course contents
The course contents are aligned with the UNICEF standards ''Amici dell'allattamento''. During the classes the following topics will be deepened:
- Brestfeeding. What are the main risks associated with the decision of avoiding brestfeeding and the importance of breast milk for both the infant and the mother's wellbeing (standard 1).
- Supporting the new mother in the initiation and continuance of brestfeeding.
- During the classes, the emphasis will be placed on the importance of keeping the infant close to the mother, understanding and responding to its signals (like those of hunger and all the other physiological needs). It is important to learn how to apply the aforementioned competences regarding the physiology of lactation. Another important focus of the course will be on the mothers. It is essential to teach them how properly feed the baby and to understand what are the main factors that should be taken into account when it comes to the infant nutrition.
- There will be classes dedicated to the UNICEF's initiative ''Insieme per l’Allattamento e il Codice Internazionale'' and to commercialization of breast milk substitutes (standard 6).
