Learning outcomes
The course aims to provide basic knowledge on the characteristics and treatment of spatial data with regards to economic phenomena. Students are introduced to the use of software for the application of statistical methods and techniques for the analysis and representation of territorial economic phenomena. At the end of the course, the student will be able to process the socio-economic databases at a territorial level and analyze and interpret spatial economic phenomena.
Course contents
Spatial statistical data: sources and databases. Classifications.
Descriptive analysis for areal:
- standardization and statistical measures
- graphical representation: working with shapefiles, thematic maps and diagram maps
Indices: concentration index, location and specialization indices,
Spatial autocorrelation: measuring spatial neighbouring, spatial weighs matrices, global and local autocorrelation indices .
Regression with spatial effects

Teaching methods
Lectures
Computer sessions for data analysis using statistical software (R/Stata).
Assessment methods
Practical test to be performed on PC. It consists in the application of the methods described during the course to spatial data and answering some questions related to the empirical analysis.
