Learning outcomes

The course of History of Contemporary Philosophy 2 aims at widening and exploring in-depth the same arguments and problems treated in the course of History of Contemporary Philosophy 1. Through the reading of texts and the involvement of students for comments and interpretations, the course focuses on the central themes that characterize twentieth century philosophy and culture. The aim is to encourage the acquisition of tools useful to understand some of the most important philosophical works of our time, as to increase the students’ critical capacity and awareness.

Course contents

Philosophy of Immanence: from Bergson to Deleuze

The course reconstructs the reception of Bergson’s thought in French philosophy in the second half of the 20th century. In the first lessons, the critiques of Sartre and Merleau – Ponty to Bergson’s position will be presented. Then, the course will focus on Gilles Deleuze: through a critical reading of some passages from Difference and Repetition, some of the most important aspects of his philosophy will be analized. The last part of the course aims at reconstructing Deleuze’s interpretation of Bergson will be reconstructed.

3. Basic skills

The knowledge of fundamental authors and themes regarding the history of philosophy between the 19th and 20th centuries is required for the oral exam.

Those who have already taken the History of Philosophy with Prof. A. Burgio or History of Contemporary Philosophy 1 LM with Prof. F. Cerrato are exempt from taking the institutional part.

Assessment methods

The final oral exam focuses on the programme’s material and will be held in the Professor’s office, Via Zamboni, 38.

The critical evaluation considers the fundamental notions, the level of the analysis and the critical skills. On the basis of these three principal parameters an overall evaluation in thirtieths is expressed.
