Course contents
The course is divided into two parts: (i) semantics of the
sentence, (ii) lexical semantics.
Part I Introduction to semantics of the sentence within the
framework of various approaches to meaning: cognitive-mentalist,
social-pragmatic, logical-denotational; componential analysis;
sense and meaning; reference; the debate over nouns syntagms;
intended meaning and literal meaning; inference mechanisms.
Part II Semantics of the word; the bidimensional nature
of lexis: the value of the linguistic sign; lexical semantic
relations on the syntagmatic and paradigmatic axes; semantic
features and the limitations of componential analysis;
terminology.
