Learning outcomes

Students know the basic problems and strategies of language mediation and are able to use them in elementary communicative situations.

Course contents

The primary objective of this Mediazione module is to teach the communicative skills, the basic level interpreter-mediated exchanges between Italian and Bulgarian and the ability to manage elementary interlinguistic and intercultural communicative situations at a professional level.

It also provides students with the basics of linguistic mediation through the use of simulations of elementary level interpreter-mediated exchanges, thus developing the necessary skills to act as interpreters in less formal settings (ex. introducing people, going shopping, booking a room, ordering food, etc.).

This course introduces the practice of sight translation both from and into Bulgarian. Other activities (such as speech reformulation, reading, exercises aimed at improving speaking and writing skills and memory, preparation of glossaries, etc.) will also be included.

During the course, an insight into topics related to culture, such as customs and holidays, as well as basics of geography, history, religion, economics, politics and society will also be introduced.

At the end of the course, students will be able to understand and deliver basic oral speeches in Bulgarian, as well as act as interpreters for the Italian-Bulgarian language combination in simulations of liaison interpreting in informal and less formal settings.

Teaching methods

Students will be actively involved in liaison interpreting simulations and sight translation exercises, including also exercises for improving comprehension, speaking skills and memory.

Assessment methods

Oral exam: mediation of a bilingual exchange and sight translation test between Bulgarian and Italian.

The final mark for this Mediazione module will then be averaged out (at 50%) against the mark of the Language and culture module.

Teaching tools

Written texts and multimedia tools for improving listening comprehension, memory, speaking, reformulation and translation skills.
