Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing students with the basis of the XIXth and XXth century Political History in European and non-European countries, with particular reference to the political-institutional systems. At the end of the course students: - will know the most relevant aspects of Contemporary History; - will be able to deal with the main issues and the fundamental cruxes of the contemporary historical evolution; - will be able to analyze the most important historical events of the Present Age both diachronically and synchronically.

Course contents

As far as the academic year 2020-2021 is concerned the Contemporary History Course aims at giving students a basic frame of political history in 19th and 20th century European and extra- European countries. A special attention will be paid to political-institutional systems. The chronology of the course ranges from the Wien Congress to the 70ies of the twentieth century. Classes provide a compared analysis of the main historical events which concerned Italy, France, Great Britain, Spain and Russia in addition to the most relevant extra-European facts.

 

The course’s lectures will be organised partly online via MS TEAMS and partly in presence. The number of students allowed in class is determined on the basis of room capacity and according to the healh and safety provisions about the pandemic emergency. In case the number of students willing to attend in presence is higher than permitted, a rotation system will be organized, in order to allow all students to participate. Regardless of the health-related conditions and the specific organization of the course, students will be able to follow the lessons of the entire course remotely on MS TEAMS.

Teaching methods

Frontal lecturing.

Assessment methods

For non-attending students: 1) an open answer questionnaire of 15 items; 2) an oral test based on the two monographs chosen by the student. Students are reminded to carry their undergraduate's record book on the day of the exam as well as the monographs they have chosen. The written test lasts 25 minutes. To pass the exam, the student must have a pass mark both the written and the oral tests. Both the oral and the written tests take place on the same day.
