Learning outcomes
Course contents
The objective is to provide some tools to help developing specialist numerical programs in financial modelling which answer specific business problems. Modelling will require an understanding of finance and design together with Excel. In particular, working on some selected financial problems, students will learn how to develop ideas into application, how to design future scenarios and demonstrate levels of risk and uncertainty, how to provide a series of answer based on different parameters, how to improve existing models.
Contents
Random variables and stochastic processes. Random walks. Risk analysis: risk assessment process and analysis.
Stock prices. Financial options: definitions, properties, pricing methods, sensitivity analysis.
Montecarlo simulation technique. Hedging strategies.
Weakness of the classic net present value model under uncertainty. Real options. Applications to investment, disinvestment, expansion and contraction projects.Readings/Bibliography
Slides and speadsheets will be made available along with supplementary material.
Teaching methods
Lectures and lab classes.
Assessment methods
Written exam (test). It can be replaced with the presentation of a case study and, in this case, a minimum of 80% attendance to the Lab classes is needed.
Teaching tools
Projector and blackboard. During lab classes a PC will be available to each student.
