Learning outcomes
Acquisition the fundamental knowledge on General and Inorganic Chemistry. In particular, the course focus on the composition, structure and reactivity of matter. Brief overview on the basic principles of inorganic pigments.
Course contents
Introduction to Chemistry. Elements and compounds. Chemical equations and rules for balancing them. Atomic structure. Electronic configurations. Periodic table and his properties. Nomenclature. Stoichiometry. Chemical bonds. Molecular geometry. States of matter and transitions. Thermodynamics. Equilibrium. Inorganic Pigments.
This course also includes laboratory activities for a total of 16 hours. Four different exercises are carried out. The first one deals with the various oxidation states of manganese, in the second one the students make an experimental determination of the atomic mass of magnesium. The third and fourth practice exercises consist in the synthesis of two pigments, i.e., the brilliant cadmium yellow (cadmium sulfide) and malachite green (a copper carbonate hydroxide). In addition to these specific issues, through these activities students get acquainted for the first time with laboratory equipments and the hazard pictograms and safety data sheets associated with chemicals.
