Learning outcomes

Students will familiarize themselves with professional ethical problems and will be able to use the fundamental strategies of liaison/dialogue interpreting and apply the techniques and skills acquired in the field of linguistic mediation.

Course contents

The aim of the course is to provide basic tools and techniques essential for professional interpreters to work in liaison/dialogue interpreting mode. Classroom activities will consist of information selection and summarizing/rephrasing exercises, memorization and stress management techniques, on-sight translations and cloze tests before moving on to actual interpretation exercises in which students will have the opportunity to act as dialogue interpreters in situations that emulate real life. Whenever possible, in-class simulations of communicative events inspired by professional reality will be carried out. The main areas will be: business interpreting, presentation of company profiles, economic-commercial relations, environment, social issues, official visits, etc. Further topics can be agreed with the students during the course.

Teaching methods

Preliminary exercises of logical analysis, memorization, summarization and oral rephrasing, as well as sight translation will be carried out before moving on to the actual liaison interpreting exercises. Students will have the opportunity to act as dialogue interpreters in situations that emulate real life, created both using authentic material (speeches, radio interviews recorded on CD and / or DVD, debates, dialogues), and through simulations of structured communication events in the classroom and inspired by professional reality (role-plays). Before tackling a specific field, we will analyze how to approach the terminology.

Assessment methods

The exam will consist of a liaison interpreting exercise in which the student will act as a dialogue interpreter in a role-play based on one of the topics covered during the academic year + 2 short on-sight translations (ru> it and it> ru).

The material used in class is available to students/uploaded on the Moodle platform with a special password.

Following the coronavirus emergency, the exams will take place remotely via the Teams platform.

Teaching tools

Audio and video recordings of authentic communicative situations simplified for teaching purposes will be used for liaison interpreting exercises and relevant texts for on-sight translations.
