Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students should be able to:

  • Read, understand and translate short Chinese literary texts;
  • Engage critically with some critical issues in Chinese literature
  • Identify the relevant historical background of the considered texts.

Course contents

The course aims to deepen the knowledge of modern Chinese literature and to consolidate the lexical and syntactic acquisition at the Intermediate and Upper intermediate levels.

The module will consist of reading and translating passages in Chinese from some of the most significant works of modern and contemporary Chinese literature, such as Kuangren riji (A Madman's diary, Lu Xun 1918), Luotou xiangzi (The rickshaw boy, Lao She 1936), Hong gaoliang jiazu, (Red Sorghum, Mo Yan 1986), Huozhe(To Live, Yu Hua 1992) and Shou huo (Lenin's kisses, Yan Liangke 2004).

The course focuses on the translation and textual analysis of the passages considered. During the lesson, the essential elements of the works under scrutiny will also be presented, taking as reference the critical notes available in the adopted textbook (Pesaro and Pirazzoli 2005).

Teaching methods

Directed study: Individual translation of specific portions of the suggested texts. Lecture: Introduction to the crucial aspects of the considered literary works. Correction, textual analysis and comment.

Assessment methods

Oral exam: Reading, translation, textual analysis and comment of one of the passages presented during the module.
