Learning outcomes
The course is aimed to understand and apply the factors behind the quantitative and qualitative aspects of agricultural production; the defense of soil fertility and the protection and enhancement of natural resources; the design, management and evaluation of crop system and ecological and environmental recovery; the use of crop residues, the development of tools for sustainable management and evaluation of the agro-ecosystem and production chains.
Course contents
Frontal lessons: Introduction, definitions and state of the art and perspectives of the bioenergy and biorefinery sectors at national and international levels with particular emphasis on cropping systems, food/non-food issues and integration, and direct and indirect land use change effects. Biofuels, bioethanol and biodiesel (conventional and advanced biofuels and biogas): main species, cultivation area and characteristics.
Knowledge gain: Innovation, challenges and opportunities from developing biomass and oil crops.
Practical activities: Visits at bioenergy and biorefinery plants and to the experimental farm of UNIBO to see lignocellulosic and oil crops in large plots.
