Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student owns a global knowledge on the main terrestrial habitats with a different degree of naturalness, described on the basis of vegetation andon the methods used for their description, with special attention to the European regulations. A special attention is given to the issues derived by the anthoogenic impact on habitat.

Course contents

The vegetation and its drivers. Geographical zones and altitudinal belts, with special regards on Europe and Italy. Vegetation types and their classification: priciples and applications. CORINE and EUNIS Classification Systems. EU Habitat Directive and Natura 2000 Network. Assessment of landscape naturalness by using the vegetation. Vegetation management: approaches, problems and tecniques. The conservation value of vegetation.

Teaching methods

Class lectures. Theaching excursions to analyse and discuss in the field about the issues of vegetation management and conservation.

Assessment methods

Type of assessment: Written test at the first examination call and interview for all the subsequent examination calls.

Type of questions: open questions.

Description of evaluation: The written test and the interview aims to verify the acquisition by the students the fundamental theoretical knowledge on the topics discussed during the course and her/his capacity to use these knowledge to understand the major issues in vegetation management and conservation.
