Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student will acquire an outline of modern history, with a special attention to the social, cultural and political transformations, and the awareness of the complexity and problematic nature of the periodization principles. The student will also acquire a good knowledge of an important theme of the modern era, especially in relation to the historiography debate and the multiplicity of the sources. The student is able to analyze in an autonomous way documents, sources, and authors belonging to the contemporary World.

Course contents

CONTEMPORARY HISTORY (A-L) (12 CFU)

COURSE CONTENTS: Contemporary History: Themes and Problems

The course will focus on some important 'events' of the contemporary age (economic, social, political and cultural events); attention will be paid to periodization and to major historical topics proposed by scholars.

Analysed themes:

1. the second industrial revolution also technical and scientific revolution (in comparison to the first industrial revolution);

2. colonialism and new imperialism during the 19th century focusing on the last decades of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th century;

3. racism;

4. WWI and the rise of authoritarian regimes;

5. Italian fascism;

6. WWII;

7. Italian Resistance.
