- Docente: Serena Silvi
- Credits: 6
- Language: Italian
- Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
- Campus: Bologna
- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Chemistry and Materials Chemistry (cod. 8006)
Learning outcomes
The students acquire the basic knowledge of laboratory tools and techniques. In particular they learn how to: safely handle chemical substances, use IUPAC nomenclature and IS units, perform stoichiometric calculi and prepare solutions, collect and process experimental data, correlate experimental data with theory.
Course contents
The course has compulsory attendance. To attend the experimental activities of the Chemistry Laboratory course, it is compulsory to attend 4/5 of the General Chemistry lectures held before the beginning of the laboratory. Furthermore it is compulsory to attend the lessons on Safety in the Chemistry Laboratory.
Safety in chemistry laboratories. Basic laboratory equipment and techniques.
Introduction to laboratory exercises:
1. Chemical reactions - Precipitation, acid-base, complexation and redox reactions.
2. Solubility constant of a silver salt.
3. Synthesis of inorganic compounds - Mohr salt, double salt of Co, Potassium alum - Stoichiometry.
4. Copper reactions - Stoichiometry - Redox, precipitation, acid-base, complexation reactions.
5. Determination of an equilibrium constant - Spectroscopic method.
6. pH Indicators.
7. Acid-base titrations.
8. Buffers.
9. Redox titrations.
10. Determination of equilibrium constants with electrochemical measurements.
Readings/Bibliography
Laboratory procedures will be available on line.
The topics of this course can be found in any university textbook
of General Chemistry. See, for example:
Steven S. Zumdhal, "Chimica", Zanichelli.
Teaching methods
The lectures will cover the general issues related to laboratory activity: safety, language, design, data processing. The course also includes practical laboratory exercises aimed at:
- developing basic skills required to carry out laboratory activities
- verifying by way of experiments some of the topics presented during the lectures of general chemistry.
Assessment methods
Practical examination.
Reports on the practical lab exercises.
The final mark is the weighted arithmetic mean between the reports (25%) and the examination (75%).
