Learning outcomes

The course intends to offer an analytic and adjourned panorama of the field of interpersonal communication: verbal and non verbal communication, and to provide a solid understanding of the pratice and techniques (for istance: encoding and decoding in interpersonal expression). The course, again, intends to offer a conceptions of Health and Illness, from the bio-medical to the bio.psycho-social model of health and illness; health psychology and related disciplines; stress and health; coping strategies; coping resources.


Course contents

The course will be held by Prof. Garotti

The aim of the course is to study the interactive processes in different contexts; in particular in the field of the doctor-patient communication.

Furthermore the students will study, during the course, the methodological aspects concerning the topic of verbal and non-verbal communication in dyadic communication, the role of communication in building an effective relationship between physician and patient.

The aim of the course, again, is to propose:

1. Conceptions of Health and Illness; from the bio-medical to the bio.psycho-social model of health and illness.

2. Health psychology. Health psychology and related disciplines (medical psychology, behavioural medicine, psychosomatic medicine).

3. Determinants of healthy behavior; attitudes, beliefs and behavior; models of health related behavior; the illness representation.

4. Stress and health; coping strategies; coping resources.

5. Compliance/adherence to treatment regimens.

6. Managment of chronic illness; psychological issues in advancing and terminal illness;  the patient in the hospital setting; the hospitalized child.

7. Subjective well-being; psychological well.being; social well-being. The quality of life.

8. Health Promotion

 

The course will take place during the first semester (from the end of September to December 2018) at the Department of Psychology of the School of Psychology and Education (address: Viale Berti Pichat 5, Bologna).

Teaching methods

Traditional lecture and small group work and discussion will be conducted by the professor. Role -playing and videorecoding  will be performed.


Assessment methods

The student competency  and preparation will be done by oral examination (the final vote expressed in thirtieth  ) after the course end. The interview will assess the critical and methodological skills acquired by the student who will be invited to speak on the issues presented during the course.

The final examination is designed to assess the achievement of educational objectives of teaching provided in the section on "Learning outcomes".

Teaching tools

PowerPoint presentation. Active participation of student will be solicited through readings, films, role-playing and discussions on papers, administration of questionnaires.
