Learning outcomes

Conscious usage of the information technologies. Knowledge of  hardware and software basics. Computer networks, the Internet and the Web specifically. When completed the course, the student should: analytically use of the computer; follow the evolution of IT; apply the computer to solve some kind of problems; be able to use common tools.

Course contents

Defining Information Technology.  The basics of networking.  HTML 5 basics.  Locating information on the WWW.  Representing information digitally.  Representing multimedia digitally.  Principles of computer operations.  Algorithmic thinking.  Social implication of Information Technology.  Privacy and digital security.  The basics of word processing.   The basics of spreadsheets.   Introduction to database concepts.  Limits to computation.

Teaching methods

Lessons and guided practice in laboratory.

Assessment methods

The exam takes place in the computer lab and it is divided in two parts.  The first part is a set of quiz with multiple choice answers on the topics of the course. The second part of the exam follows the first one and is document composed by combining the capabilities of an office automation application, i.e: word processing, spreadsheet, database.
