04762 - Outfitting and Museography

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Cesena
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Architecture (cod. 0881)

Learning outcomes

After completing the course, students acquire sufficient knowledge to analyze, break down and manage the complexity and articulation of an architectural project in the field of museography .

The student acquires also the basic knowledge in the broad field of disciplinary matters museography learning the ability to anticipate metaprojectual schemes, methods and solutions aimed at the design solution. Through the knowledge gained, the student can then use the architectural project as a methodology for the study, analysis and presentation of the creative process of the museographic and exhibition design and is able to define the overall development.

Course contents

The archetypal matrix of the "collect" and "preserve" to "pass on" form the anthropological foundation of collecting and then of the museography. In this perspective, the tomb, the temple, the city, the arsenal, the theater, the garden and the library are the places where you «inverano» different epiphanies of the museum.

The acquisition of the major historical experiences in the field of the specific disciplinary becomes the preliminary condition for the formulation of a coherent knowledge, these archetypal matrices up to current events related to museology and to the contemporary museum design.

The term "preparation" identifies a specific legal peculiar design of the architect. It is, in fact, a very broad field in itself that involves multiple disciplines, some linked to history, as the preservation or archeology, other communication such as graphics or semiotics, others more technological fields such as lighting or industrial design, and others to commercial fields such as marketing or product category.

Teaching methods

The teaching of the course is structured according to a "path" approach to the discipline made possible by a synthetic framework of bibliographic reference, deepened and enriched, during the course, of a varied program of lectures ex cathedra and a design experience. In the lessons we will analyze the fundamental issues of discipline and performed comparative analyzes of case studies as well as top of the tutorial project. During the lessons will regularly use video projections. In particular, the lessons will be set in a seminar, in order to encourage staff and critical contribution of the students, the same will be checked the state of progression of the project.

Assessment methods

Students will be asked to perform a design experience, simulating the setting of a temporary exhibition of art dedicated to the work of the sculptor Pino Castagna in complex of the malatestiana fortress in Cesena.

The project will build on the construction of a narrative and the complex relationships that exist among the sculptures and space. The project will be conducted using the tools of architectural design taking into account the graphical techniques most appropriate to the topic. Graphic material and analytical information needed to prepare the project, as well as a work of literature Pino Castagna, will be provided during the course.

The assessment is done by evaluating the design of the exercise, which ensures the acquisition of knowledge and skills expected by conducting an oral examination lasting a minimum of 30 minutes without the aid of notes or books.

The oral examination consists of: a design review of the exercise during which the teacher informs the student on correction criteria, receiving any clarifications to the same student; an oral study aimed to assess the knowledge and skills acquired general applied to a critical discussion of the project.

Passing the exam will be granted to students who demonstrate mastery and operational capacity in relation to the key concepts discussed in teaching, and in particular to capcity to understand and manage the complexity of the design point. A higher score will be awarded to students who demonstrate that they understand and be able to use all of the teaching content illustrating them with skills and peculiar properties of language, solving issues too complex, with good operational control, etc. Failure to pass the exam may be due to insufficient knowledge of the key concepts, the lack mastery of specific technical language and a lack of or insufficient operational capacity.

Project

Establishment of an exhibition of sculptures of the Master Pino Castagna:

Complex of the malatestiana fortress – Cesena

Design documents

The construction documents shall be in A1 format using digital techniques of drawing by hand accompanied by the study of the assumptions made and the proposed solutions, photography and processing programs digitized in the same provide a valuable support for the verification of locations and staging in general and in detail.

TABLE 1 - General overview on the table route of the exhibition.

TABLE 2 - Table of detail and analysis of the most significant installations in order to illustrate the spirit of the show.

TABLE 3 - Table of detail and analysis of the enforceability of the proposed equipment.

REPORT - Three typewritten pages will give account of the choice of works - only 15 of the 30 proposals will be the selection for the exhibition - and the design assumptions identified

CD or DVD - The files relating to the three tables and the report will be saved on digital media - CD or DVD - and delivered on the occasion of the discussion exam.

Will be organized visits to museums, exhibitions of art and to companies operating within specification.

The evaluation of the examination will be determined not only by the quality of the tutorial presented by the knowledge of the topics covered during the lessons and refer to the bibliography. During the examination it will be assessed the knowledge that the student will have developed on the specific bibliography.

Teaching tools

A prerequisite for any particular reflection on the issues of the preparation and of museology are asked some preliminary considerations on the genesis and the birth of the "museum":

  • notes on historical background, cultural and anthropological;
  • evolution and transformation of the structural and spatial environment "museum", in relation to changes in the ideological character which affected over time, the institution museum;
  • description of the gradual shift from function "unique" - originally - in function "plural" - the present - and how this transformation has affected, over time, the set of types, spatial and architectural museum.

It also investigated how to set up the museum's own "closed" and the museum to display "open", as well as the specific issues of the museums themselves:

  • archaeological museums;
  • art museums;
  • science museums;
  • etc.

At the same time we analyze the so-calle “temporary” exposure mode, intended as specific declination disciplinary design and museology and museum design, in reference to the museum which term need for comparison and comparison to how design and construction of the exhibition itself. The theme of the exhibition en plein air in urban areas of consolidated historical matrix, calls for a deeper reflection on its own terms around which the architect is called upon to strike the "path" and the "story" allestitivo:

  • the matter;
  • history;
  • architecture;
  • space natural / artificial.

These features provide the primary information for the creation of a meta-model design and functional museum/exhibition.
