Course contents

The course deals with the connections between history of architecture on one side and architectural restoration and conservation on the other. The time span is from 19th Century to actuality.

The course named History and Restoration is an integrated course composed by two courses: History of Architecture III and Theory and History of Architectural Restoration.

The course is structured in thematic units shared by the two courses with the aim to analyze the role of time and history in design processes from different disciplinary perspectives. Teachers of the two courses will alternate during first and second semester. The will be shared seminars and invited teachers.

The units are:

  • History and design in 19th Century
  • Preservation rules
  • History and design in the Interwar Period in Italy
  • History and design in Post-war Italy
  • Museum, monument, history
  • Projects on the existing
  • Time and figure in design processes

An exercise, shared by the two courses, will be performed by students during class hours.

The two courses will organize educational travels to visit works and cities presented during classes.

Readings/Bibliography

At the end of each lesson students will find on AMS CAMPUS the related educational supports with a specific bibliography and lecture notes.

Lessons, symposiums, exercises, study trips.

Assessment methods

The exam is an interview split in two parts (History of Architecture and Theory and History of Architectural Restoration) but with only one mark.

In order to take the exam, the students need a positive mark in the class exercise and are requested to know the lecture notes.

The exam length is about 20 minutes: it consists in an explanation of a free subject chosen by the student and, at least, in two questions.
