33945 - Plates and Shells M

Academic Year 2017/2018

  • Docente: Francesco Tornabene
  • Credits: 6
  • SSD: ICAR/08
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Mechanical Engineering (cod. 0938)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Energy Engineering (cod. 0935)

Learning outcomes

Provide skills for the analysis and design of structures in surface development. In particular, the different theories used to model plates and shells are applied to the resolution of problems of industrial engineering. It emphasizes the importance of the approximations and their influence on the results.

Course contents

Theory of curved structures or shells.

Theory of plates: rectangular, circular and degenerate.

The composite materials.

The main shell structures.

Free vibration.

Recovery of the stress and strain states.

Finite elements in strong and weak form.

Teaching methods

The course is entirely done during school hours. The lessons are accompanied by exercises in the classroom and in the Laboratory of Computational Mechanics.

Assessment methods

Achievements will be assessed by the means of a final exam. This is based on an analytical assessment of the "expected learning outcomes" described above.
In order to properly assess such achievement the examination is composed composed of almost three questions, for each question the scores max is 10 points.
The oral session, consists of: a technical conversation regarding the topics of the course.
Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate an organic understanding of the subject, a high ability for critical application, and a clear and concise presentation of the contents.
To obtain a passing grade, students are required to at least demonstrate a knowledge of the key concepts of the subject, some ability for critical application, and a comprehensible use of technical language.
A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in key-concepts of the subject, inappropriate use of language, and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject.

Teaching tools

The tools to support teaching in the classroom are: the overhead projector and the projector.
