37201 - Metabolic Biochemistry (A)

Academic Year 2013/2014

  • Docente: Carlo Guarnieri
  • Credits: 10
  • Language: Italian
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 8415)

Learning outcomes

At the end   of the course the   student knows :   the essential elements   of the   intermediary metabolism   of the major   biological molecules   ( carbohydrates, lipids   and nitrogen compounds ), the   energy   changes   associated with them , their   interrelationships in response to metabolic and   hormonal   regulation ,   as well as   the cellular and tissue localization   of the   cell   major   metabolic pathways ;   the specialization   of the various   organs   and tissues   in   metabolic activities.

Course contents

It is an integrated course and consist of various topics which are  described in the global programme of the integrated course.
The programme of Prof. Guarnieri consists of the following arguments:
General concepts on energetic and metabolic regulation.
Carbohydrate metabolism :
Digestion of carbohydrates;Glycogen metabolism;Glycolysis;Pentose phosphate cycle;Gluconeogenesis;Hormonal and metabolic regulation of the glucidic
metabolism.Pyruvate oxidation and tricarboxylic Kreb's cycle;Mitochondrial ATP production.
Lipid metabolism : General aspects of triacygligerol and complex lipids. Digestion of lipids ;Lipolysis and lipogenesis;ketogenesis;Complex lipid biosynthesis and catabolism. Cholesterol metabolism and functions;Plasmatic lipoproteins. Bile acids and steroid hormones.
Protein metabolism :
Digestion of proteins;Biosynthesis and degradation of aminoacids;Urea cycle;Neurotransmitters;Biosynthesis and degradation of purine and
pyrimidine nucleotides.Biogenic amines.
Metabolic regulation in different physiological and pathological conditions
(feeding,starvation,exercise,diabete,obesity)
Main biochemical pathways in human organs and tissues (liver, muscle, adipose, nervous and bone tissues, kidney)
