Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

At the end of the course the student will know how to intepret the characterisitcs of the contemporary city, with particiular reference to the new challenges of urban and rural contexts. The student will know the main available tools and methods to understand, plan and desing the urban and rural areas, aiming at improving the quality of life and the wellbeing of the citizens both in urban and rural areas.

Contenuti

The course will begin with an introduction to planning principles, processes, methods and tools to support students understanding around the concept of sustainability, resilience and planning.

Planning will be considered in both rural and urban environment considering those as complex socio-ecological system. Around the idea of planning the course will touch upon the following topics:

- Planning processes: what does to mean to sustainably plan a city or a territory?

- Planning processes: methods and tools

- Urban and rural: demographics challenges and opportunities

- Gender-sensitive planning

- Tourism and over-tourism: how to find a balance?

- Affordable housing

- Climate risk in urban and rural areas

Moreover, the course will be integrated with a practical laboratory part that will include theoretical classes around Geographical Information Systems (GIS), data management and data analysis. Students will be assigned with tasks over the course to be performed in groups and/or in pairs over the course duration. Participation to the lab is compulsory.

Theoretical approach will be mixed with interactive classes and practical exercises in classes

Theoretical part:

The course deals with planning and management of complex urban and rural socio-ecological systems, analysing the problems of the natural and built environment and techniques for developing planning tools, at different scales. The theoretical presentation of the principles and rules dealt with in the lessons is completed through seminars with the participation of experts presenting plans and good practices.

Interactive classes: 

The theoretical part will be mixed with interactive, non-formal education methods that will increase peer to peer learning opportunities.

Practical task/laboratory:

Assignments will be developed by students in pairs/groups around the different topics of the course.
