By the end of the course, students will know the basics of Tableau. During the course they will learn how to import data, create datasets and interactive visualizations with Tableau.

Introduction to Tableau

• Description of Tableau tools (Desktop, Server, Public and Prep)
• Setup
• Overview of the Tableau desktop interface and its functionality
• Importing and connecting data from different sources
• Introduction to the data model (relations)

Tableau Fundamentals

• Dimensions and metrics
• Organize data
• Filter data

Creating Basic Visualisations

• Graph types: bar graphs and scatter graphs
• Using colours, shapes and labels to enhance visualisations
• Introduction to creating geographical maps

Calculated fields and other analysis tools

• Creating customised calculations and calculated fields
• Hierarchies
• Sets
• Using filters and actions to create interactivity

Creating Dashboards

• Basic concepts of data visualisation and visual analysis
• Designing and creating dashboards for the presentation of multiple visualisations
• Adding global filters and interactivity between visualisations
• Optimising the appearance and layout of a dashboard

Metodi didattici

Lessons in lab held by prof. Andrea Fornoni andrea.foroni2@unibo.it.

The course is very practical. The concepts and ideas are tested and applied on since the very beginning. The use of a computer/laptop is mandatory.

In consideration of the type of activity and the teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the prior participation of all students in the training modules 1 and 2 on safety in the study places, in e-learning mode. Module I and II

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

The evaluation of the course is based on a practical assignment with Tableau.

Strumenti a supporto della didattica

• Tableau Desktop is used. Online access with a browser in a computer is required.
• Teaching notes, exercises and other teaching materials provided by the instructor.
• Moodle virtual campus required to communicate with students and manage the assignments.
