Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire
Students acquire the ability to assess marine renewable energy potential and to conceptually design energy devices. They will be able to assess marine energy potential (wind, waves, tides, currents, etc.) and will have knowledge about devices for marine energy harvesting and technological challenges, and assessment of Environmental, social and economic impacts.
Contenuti
Marine renewable energy: sources (wind, wave, tide) and variability.
Type of marine renewable energy converters. Fixed and floating wind turbines. Wave energy converters: classification, main existing converters, barriers to commercialisation, technological challenges.
Environmental impact of MRE devices.
Costs of MRE devices.
Statistical analysis of climate data (waves and/or tides), including seasonality and extremes.
Optimal mixing of MRE. Criteria and tool. Case studies.
Multi-use marine areas. Integration of different economic activities: MRE, aquaculture, tourism, maritime hubs. Case studies.
Re-purposing of O&G platforms.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento
Achievements will be assessed by means of an oral exam, which consists of technical conversation with the lecturer.
The exam is aimed at assessing the acquired knowledge, the ability of synthesis and application of the key course contents.
To obtain a passing grade, students are required to demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of the key concepts of the subject.
Higher grades will be awarded to students who demonstrate the full knowledge of the subject, the capacity of a clear and critical presentation of the contents, appropriate use of the technical language and ability for application to sample cases.
A failing grade will be awarded if the student shows knowledge gaps in the key-concepts of the subject, inappropriate use of the technical language, and/or logic failures in the analysis of the subject.
Strumenti a supporto della didattica
Course materials, tutorials, files, videos, etc. will be available on the interactive course website Virtuale.
