  • Corso: Laurea Magistrale in Photochemistry and Molecular Materials (cod. 9074)

Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

At the end of the course the student has acquired the knowledge for the design of contrast agents for the most common imaging techniques and of possible drug delivery systems, with a critical approach to nanomedicine, the knowledge of kinetic and thermodynamic stability of colloidal systems and stimuli-responsive materials, as well as of the main photochemical techniques used to investigate them.

Contenuti

Prerequisites: knowledge of physical chemistry bases for the description of atoms and molecules. Basic knowledge of photochemistry and photophysics, like excited state properties, radiative and radiative processes, bimolecular quenching processes

Principle and example of soft and light responsive materials. Self-assembly in solution, uptake and release of a target molecule by light interaction.

Fast survey on photophysical techniques:

- Electronic absorption spectroscopy (technics and instrumentation)

- Emission spectroscopy - technics and instrumentation - emission and excitation spectra - interferences (light and raman scattering, harmonics) – luminescence anisotropy

- Emission lifetimes determination (instrumentation)

- Irradiation technics (lamps, filters, actinometers, etc.) and estimation of photoisomerization quantum yield

- Dinamic light scattering (DLS)

- Oxygen sensing in solution and in biological systems

LAB experiments:

Spectroscopic characterization of several compounds by practical determination of their absorption and emission spectra, photochemical reactivity, reaction and emission quantum yields, actinometers. Photophysical characterization of a light responsive supramolecular system and photorelease of a target fluorophore. Sensor for pH or specific ions.

At the end of the course, the student has acquired the knowledge of soft and light responsive materials, the bases of photophysics and photochemistry techniques. In particular, the students is able to: - understand the working principle and use of the simplest photochemical techniques; - use the simplest photophysical and photochemical techniques both in steady-state and time-resolved regime, usually employed to characterize and investigate complex systems.

Metodi didattici

Class lessons: theoretical lessons (2 CFU) will be devoted to the presentation principle of soft and light responsive materials as well as the various technics useful to study their photochemical and photophysical behaviour. The lectures (1 CFU) will present the Laboratory experiments: laboratory experiences (2 CFU) are aimed at reaching the manual ability and the necessary knowledge to perform a photochemical study.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend Module 1, 2 online, while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class or on Microsoft Teams according to the modality chosen by the teacher. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree program.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Oral examination and reports on the practical lab exercises (Dr. Villa). The examination will verify that the student has acquired knowledge of photochemistry and the capacity to tackle real experimental problems related to soft and photoactive systems.

The final mark is calculated as the average of the two parts: Part 1,Nanomedicine Prof. Prodi (5 CFU), Part 2, Soft and light responsive materials Dr. Villa (5 CFU).
