Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

At the end of the course the student will know how to intepret the characterisitcs of the contemporary city, with particiular reference to the new challenges of urban and rural contexts. The student will know the main available tools and methods to understand, plan and desing the urban and rural areas, aiming at improving the quality of life and the wellbeing of the citizens both in urban and rural areas.

Introduction to the course: urban challenges, SDGs and cities, etc.

Planning in a changing society, but how the society is changing?

Urban and rural development and regeneration

Urban regeneration and urban planning tools

New city paradigms: resilient city, circular city, creative city, health city, liquid city, smart/ augmented city

Planning the energy transition: policy instruments, SEAPs, energy poverty, energy communities

Risk assessment and management: a look at diverse natural hazard and mitigation and adaptation strategies

The design of the city to enhance sustainable mobility: multimodality, seamless mobility, bicycle and pedestrian mobility

Affordable housing, social housing and housing policies in Europe

Cultural and Natural Heritage as a driver for regeneration and resilience

Sustainable Tourism for inclusive local development

Workshop/seminar on EU project development: how to embed sustainable urban planning principles into a new project proposal

Metodi didattici

The course programme is articulated in two parts: the theoretical part and the practical work.

Theoretical part:

The course deals with planning and management of complex urban systems, analysing the problems of the natural and built environment and techniques for developing planning tools, at different scales, with particular reference to plan and projects about sustainability, mobility, environmental risk prevention. The theoretical presentation of the principles and rules dealt with in the lessons is completed through seminars with the participation of experts presenting plans and good practices.

Practical work:

The project is developed in groups under the supervision of the teachers
