Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

The course aims at introducing students to the utilization of one of the main statistical packages for data analysis and presenting to them the basic elements of micro-data management and analysis. By the end of the course students will be familiar with the statistical package interface and be able to: load different types of data and different file formats into the statistical package, perform basic data management operations and conduct monovariate and multivariate statistical analyses using the software introduced during the course.

Contenuti

This is a methodological workshop focusing on the acquisition of skills and abilities for writing a scientific paper (for NGOs, IGOs, think tanks etc.) THERE ARE NO PREREQUISITES AND NO SPECIAL EQUIPMENT IS NEEDED.

FIRST PART: GUIDELINES: from March 22 to April 5

1. Academic papers, scientific reports, and informative articles

(Differences between convincing and informing/question-based papers, topic-based papers, etc.)

2. Time management and hammering out your topic

(Overturning writing obstacles, the core of your argument, tweaking your abstract)

3. Advancing your argument

4. Strengthening your structure

5. Writing a research paper out of ethnographic fieldwork

SECOND PART: STUDENTS' PRESENTATIONS from May 10 to May 24

Metodi didattici

Participation in class discussions and presentation of one's papers is required.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Attending Students: Class participation and a short paper (about 4000 words) to be submitted by May 10th. The topic is at student's choice. The course is Pass/Fail. All who participate in class discussions, submit and present their work will pass.

Non-attending students: Scientific article (about 4000 words) developed on the guidelines (readings) uploaded on Virtuale on March 22nd to be delivered by May 22th. The written work must be clearly recognizable as an information article, report or research paper. Students can choose topics from a list published online by March 22nd.
