Conoscenze e abilità da conseguire

Il corso esamina l'opera di Tucidide al fine di enuclearne i concetti più importanti per la comprensione di due fenomeni principali, vale a dire l'imperialismo e la guerra per l'egemonia. Al testo tucidideo si affianca un uso mirato della letteratura secondaria più rilevante a tali fini. Al termine del corso lo studente è in grado di apprezzare i fenomeni analizzati da Tucidide come situazioni idealtipiche della politica internazionale e di porre il relazione l'opera tucididea con alcune concettualizzazioni caratteristiche della teoria delle relazioni internazionali e degli studi strategici.

Contenuti

Il corso muove dall'assunto secondo il quale le Storie di Tucidide possono essere viste non solo come un capolavoro della storiografia antica ma anche come un'opera da cui traspare una concezione generale della politica internazionale, basata su una serie di caratterizzazioni idealtipiche degli stati e delle loro relazioni. Nostro compito sarà dunque quello di identificare questi temi centrali e organizzarli all'interno di uno schema concettuale. A tale fine, il corso sarà diviso in due parti, una dedicata alla lettura e al commento del testo, l'altra centrata sulla ricostruzione teorica.

Dal momento che tutto il corso è basato sul testo originale che, come detto, verrà letto e discusso in classe, gli studenti dovranno fare riferimento alla stessa traduzione. Si adotta qui quella di E. Savino (Tucidide, La guerra del Peloponneso, Milano, Garzanti, 1974), disponibile anche in formato elettronico.

Lettura e commento dei testi sopra indicati. E' quindi assolutamente indispensabile che gli studenti si presentino a lezione con il materiale che verrà esaminato quel giorno e avendone già preso visione.

Modalità di verifica e valutazione dell'apprendimento

Verifica scritta: due saggi di 4000 parole ciascuno, su argomenti assegnati dal docente alla fine del corso, da svolgere a casa propria. La votazione ottenuta potrà essere migliorata (o peggiorata, a seconda dei casi), con lo svolgimento di una prova orale, su richiesta dello studente.
